(Stone Ridge, NY) - The North River Electric House is pleased to present works on paper by Lynne Tobin. The exhibition opens Thursday, July 17, during Upstate Art Weekend, with a reception for the artist, Friday, July 18, from 5:00 - 8:00 and runs through September 13, 2025. Lynne Tobin's solo exhibition, Line Studies, challenges the traditional boundaries between drawing, textile arts, and installation. With threads and rope saturated in black ink, Tobin creates sculptural forms and spaces on the two dimensions of white paper, deftly balancing on the cusp of controlled execution and unrestrained creativity. Drawing inspiration from simple materials, everyday rituals, and meditation practice, Tobin’s black-and-white drawings explore rhythm and movement while evoking a sense of stillness and contemplative intimacy. A version of this special solo exhibition was recently in Venice, Italy, during the 60th Venice Biennale.

Artist:
Lynne Tobin is a mixed-media artist currently living in the Hudson Valley. Her recent work is inspired by the materials, rhythms, and patterns found in everyday domestic activities and in crafts traditionally associated with women.
Prior to moving to the Hudson Valley in 2019, Tobin’s work has been included in numerous solo and group shows in the Providence, RI area and in New England, including at the Chazan gallery, the Krause gallery and the New Bedford Art Museum. In 2019, she had work included in Paper 2019 at the Silvermine Galleries in CT. In 2021, Tobin’s ink drawings were included in the flat file collection at the Kentler International Drawing Space in Brooklyn, NY. In May 2024, Tobin’s ink drawing Threads #2 was awarded Honorable Mention by the Chief Curator at the Whitney Museum of American Art in a juried show at the Long Beach Island Foundation in NJ. In July 2024, Tobin was in a two-person exhibition with sculptor Millicent Young at Castello 925 in Venice, Italy. This was followed by a solo exhibition of Tobin’s ink drawings in August, also in Venice, Italy.
Over the past 8 years, Tobin has been awarded multiple art residencies, including a residency at the School of Visual Arts in NYC in 2016. This is where she began working with string and ink on paper. Tobin also had residencies in 2017 at the Vermont Studio Center and multiple fellowships at the Virginia Center of Creative Arts (VCCA) in VA in 2018 and 2023. Tobin will return to VCCA again as a fellow in 2025.
