Transformed from realistic landscapes to dreamy, melancholy assemblages, using unexpected materials. Schmid-Maybach begins by photographing natural and urban landscapes, often from California and the Pacific Northwest. Each photograph is then printed on silk or kozo paper, a special kind of Japanese paper made from mulberry trees. Sometimes, Schmid-Maybach stitches these images into a grid before using a free-motion embroidery machine to sew the printed photographs. In addition, she often layers gauze and printed silk on top of her sewn images. Schmid-Maybach may even attach small found objects to add more depth and dimension. The result feels more like a tapestry than photography. "My intervention blurs the line between what's real in the photograph and what's beyond the image.
