Jack Fischer Gallery is pleased to present unravel, a two person exhibition by Lauren Davies and Kirsten Stolle. Join us for the opening reception on May 18, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at our Potrero location. The show will be up through June 29, 2019.

The work shown in this exhibition is pertinent to our current political, economic and social state. It touches upon themes that are now more than ever present in our society. With climate change threatening the destruction of our planet, the current president ignoring the consequences in his attempt to bring back jobs to the fossil fuel industry all the while feeding the interests of a few billionaires, the challenges of the dominant mode of agriculture and lack of interest in the proposal of a fair food system, we as a society face many challenges.

In this exhibition, Lauren Davies presents her photo-based project of obsolete factories, shopping malls, and abandoned homes in the Rust Belt. Her work involves uploading digital files to Walmart’s website where the photographs are processed into woven versions of her images. Davies then deconstructs the photographic weaving by pulling threads from the image and incorporating various processes such as over-dying, bleaching and collaging. The images seem to be dematerializing and reduced to knots of hanging threads that play with the notion of decline and neglect.

With her collage project, Our Roots Run Deep, Kirsten Stolle examines how chemical companies such as Monsanto and Dow Chemical frame their stories through curated images concealing their pesticides’ decades-long toxic impact on the soil. Her work repurposes historical and contemporary photographs, and employs interventions to unfold past and present narratives. Black and white photographs of chemical factories are situated against color photographs of corn, soy, canola, wheat, and alfalfa fields. Cut-outs, hole punches, collaged spheres, and ink circles are introduced and serve as viewfinders, a resting point to focus the eye. It is this back and forth tension between bleak chemical plants and fertile farms that underscores the industry’s false narrative.

By the Ton, also shown in the exhibition, uses images and text to uncover the damaging history of multinational chemical companies and spotlight their influence on the global food system. The artist silkscreens buzzwords and slogans from chemical company promotional materials over factory photographs to dissect the prevailing rhetoric and critique the practice of corporate greenwashing. By mirroring the seductive imagery, language, and typography, she invites viewers to critically engage with agribusiness propaganda.
