Hashimoto Contemporary is pleased to present Lately, a group exhibition exploring contemporary representational painting and drawing. Fluctuating from fluid, abstract mark making to tightly rendered details, each artist brings a fresh point of view and definition to realism in the depiction of their subjects.

Featuring 13 artists from around the world, the exhibition offers a cross-section of artists whose work we have been watching recently. From long time gallery artists developing new bodies of work to fresh faces making their Hashimoto Contemporary debut, each artist contributes their unique approach to illustrating their version of reality.

Each simulacra imparts the artists’ perspective and practice upon the imagery, from Joel Daniel Phillips’ retelling of nuclear testing during WWII via historical photographs to Martine Johanna’s tenuous and surreal figure to the censorial pixilation of Jessica Hess’ architectural landscape. Offering a variety of media and style, from the relaxed and care-free figures in Jeffrey Cheung’s oil pastel canvas, to the flattened and stylized party scenes in Chelsea Wong’s watercolors, to the sensitive and allegorical paintings of Nadia Waheed (pictured above) as the title suggests, the exhibition is a collection of artists whose work we have been contemplating lately.

Please join us for Lately, opening January 11th with an evening reception from 6pm - 9pm where some of the artists will be in attendance. The exhibition will be on view through February 1st. For more information, additional images, or exclusive content, please email us at sf@hashimotocontemporary.com.
