From October 22nd through November 15th, CK Contemporary will present Juan Escauriaza: Setting the Scene, the gallery’s third solo exhibition for the contemporary Spanish painter.  Escauriaza’s work was the subject of the gallery’s very first exhibition in 2013, nearly ten years ago, and he has been an important pillar of CK Contemporary’s roster ever since.

Setting the Scene showcases new large scale works of acrylic on linen, through which Escauriaza explores the American experience and San Francisco’s urban landscape. His subjects, rendered with a delicate balance of sharp precision and lively brushwork, highlight his “outsider” perspective as he examines the sides of the city that are frequently overlooked.

To look at Juan Escauriaza’s paintings is to be reminded of the work of Edward Hopper, whose depictions of the modern landscape revealed ordinary moments brimming with life. With a similar reliance on the nuances and drama of light and shadow, Escauriaza seeks to unfold the experience of memory and emotion with his intimate views of the commonplace and familiar. His work offers us a chance to see the beauty hidden in what we may easily pass by, and reminds us to seek awareness and appreciation for the simpler moments in our life and our surroundings.

After the global lockdowns of the last two years, Escauriaza’s paintings call attention to everything we no longer take for granted - a cloudless blue sky, an encounter on the street corner, or the character of our local neighborhood.

Artist ( Description ):

Juan Escauriaza(Spanish, b. 1961)

Juan Escauriaza was born in Madrid in 1961. He has a notable background in science, with a PhD in Geological Sciences and postgraduate degrees in Hydro-Geology and Paleontology. Although he worked for ten years as a geologist with several prominent companies in Spain his true passion was always for art, and in 1994 he dedicated himself solely to painting. Since then, he has had over sixteen solo exhibitions, numerous group shows, and a major retrospective sponsored by the City Hall of Madrid. His outstanding critical and commercial success is made even more remarkable by the fact that Escauriaza is an entirely self taught artist.

Although he still resides in Spain, Escauriaza’s work is focused on the American landscape. He visits the US frequently and studies his surroundings in order to find inspiration for his subject matter. Inevitably, he is drawn to those elements of the landscape that many of us might pass by without registering a second glance. His scientific background is evidenced by the attention to geometry and balance within his work, often highlighting architectural angles or unique vantage points. He captures the urban landscape with a somewhat removed viewpoint, allowing the viewer of his artwork to observe the everyday with a new perspective. By way of acrylic brushed on linen with masterful prowess, Escauriaza reminds his viewers of the poetry of place and the beauty of the prosaic.
