Jack Fischer Gallery is pleased to present drawing to conclusions the third exhibition with the gallery by Hamburg-based artist Eiko Borcherding. Join us for the opening reception on July 7, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at our Minnesota Street Project location. The show will be up through August 25, 2018.

In this new exhibition, Eiko continues to show his exquisite pencil and mixed media drawings on found fragile paper. His love for paper is reflected in his findings of vintage paper scraps and old book covers in flea markets or antique stores, which he then commandeers for his drawings.

The cloud pieces, of which there will be four included in the exhibition, echo Vija Celmins beautiful ocean pieces without the fussiness and all the spirit. His work also brings to mind Rembrandt and Durer, especially the latter one, whereby Borcherding’s depictions of fauna and flora are the main focus.

Borcherding also experiments with photogravure by etching a negative from a found photograph, adding compelling sensitivity and mystery to already complex imagery. His work reflects on ideals of mortality, combining the natural world with trivial motifs, whether the subject is a flower bouquet, an antique dress, birds, trees or foxes. The artist adds: "After being picked for an artist in residence scholarship at the Emil Nolde Foundation in the very north of Germany in 2010-11, I found myself living in the countryside right next to the Danish border. During this time, I focused on nature as a main topic of my work. My drawings of landscapes with big mountains of gray clouds but only a small horizon on the bottom gives you an idea of what it looks like over there. Absolutely nothing is happening except the sky turning from gray to black. I discovered nature as display for human emotions resulting in a big series of crest like combinations of flora and fauna discussing topics like life and death, beauty and fading."
