Sydell Lewis and Joyce Savre will be featured artists at Gallery House in March in an exhibit called "Spatial Memories”.The exhibit will run from March 1 through March 26, 2016. Lewis is represented locally by Gallery House in Palo Alto and by Robert Allen Fine Arts in Sausalito. She has exhibited her work in New York City with both the Dacia Gallery in 2012 in an invited group show and the Artifact Gallery in 2015 in a featured show of her aerial paintings from the “ Embracing Space Series”. In the preface of the show’s catalogue, John Austin a Manhattan based writer reflects on her work: “ Her image- making involves a fragile synthesis: It draws together her powers of observation as well as those of her singular intelligence. Together they re-construct the world for us through the creative action of her imagination.”
Joyce Savre is an award winning artist from Menlo Park who says she “came to painting by way of poetry” Still writing poetry as well as painting, she often incorporates language and handwriting in her work—a line of poetry becomes a row of beets in the farmer’s field.
The words in the painting are not meant to be read however, here they are used as symbols for the importance of using our words and honoring all languages as she believes language holds the key perhaps to our survival – In some paintings, the layering of language sets up the depth of space suggesting layers of thought, seeing beyond, or seeing one’s history-- as in memories.
