CTRL+SHFT Collective is pleased to announce Traslación: forma del lenguaje / lenguaje de la forma, an exhibition curated by Susana Eslava Sáenz and Carolina Magis Weinberg, on view from October 27th through December 9th. “Traslación” refers to the long movement of a planet around a gravitational force, a circular movement that always implies a return to the first position. Traslación: forma del lenguaje/lenguaje de la forma is a curatorial collaboration that brings together seven artists in an exploration of simultaneous distance and proximity. The artists are Ana María Montenegro Jaramillo, Enar de Dios Rodríguez, Shaghayegh Cyrous, Patricia Leal, Ingibjörg Friðriksdóttir, Carolina Magis Weinberg, and Susana Eslava.
The participating artists share the experience of leaving their countries and passing through the Bay Area at one point of their lives. In doing so, they have embodied a constant state of strangeness, and experienced an otherness that is reflected in their work. Existing in this state has pushed them to re-recognize themselves in a new land, through a new language and a new set of relations. Some of the artists are still here in the Bay Area, some have returned to their home places, recognizing themselves as strangers once again.
Traslación is a stage that exposes the artists’ different experiences through visual, sound, and performative pieces, that are put into dialogue, reflection, and reinterpretation in this space.
Artist:
Shaghayegh Cyrous was born in Tehran where she began her artistic practice with painting, urban installation, performance, and photography. In 2011, Shaghayegh moved to the Bay Area due to political tensions in her home country. Since then, her work has dealt with the experience of cross cultural communication and translation, addressing predicaments of estrangement, and distance caused by political and cultural power dynamics.
Enar de Dios Rodríguez is an artist from Spain, currently based in Vienna whose work includes photography, video, websites, poetry, installations, and drawings. In her research-based artistic practice, she examines the relationship between existing texts and images, facts and fictions, and their documentation.
Susana Eslava is an interdisciplinary artist, editorial producer, and cultural worker from Bogotá, Colombia. Her work explores the intersections of social relations, art, politics, and nature within the dynamics of translation, migration, and colonization.
Ingibjörg Friðriksdóttir was born in Reykjavik, Iceland. In 2015, she won a Fulbright Grant to travel to the United States where she studied a MFA in Music Composition at Mills College. Her works have been performed e.g. at Reykjavik Culture Nights, Podium festivals, and Dark Music Days, favorably reviewed by the music critic of the Times. She currently lives and works in the East Bay, California.
Patricia Leal is an Oakland-based artist originally from Recife, Brazil. Her interdisciplinary practice working in sculpture, installation, video, and performance has been largely informed by her experience as an outsider living in the United States.
Ana María Montenegro Jaramillo is an artist from Bogotá, Colombia. While her practice is characterized by a constant exploration of different media such as video, archival material and performance, most of Ana´s work circulates around notions such as the infinite, the internet, and the politics of technology in the contemporary scene.
Carolina Magis Weinberg is a whether reporter and a sight-specific artist. The primordial quest in her practice is to discover the multiple dimensions of one’s experience of space through individuality. She explores the possibility of finding an intimacy in maps, monuments, and different spatial phenomena. She is equally fascinated by confettï and snow. She is currently exploring the accent as it appears within the visual production of the periphery.
