MOTIVE attempts to reveal the underpinnings of what inspires power and actions of control through wealth, religion, tradition, ideals, and values. And, how do these motives result in corruption, illness, poverty, and environmental destruction?

"Feminine energy is breaking out around the world. Women are taking control as political leaders and active fighters in the military and rebel groups. But while the number of current female leaders – excluding monarchs and figureheads – has more than doubled since 2000, most of the world’s nations have never been led by a woman (Pew Research Center, March 8, 2017). We are already familiar with what happens when men are in power. Male energy has led us to endless wars, to mass destruction and devastation of our planet and its natural resources, to genocide. It is time for change and for the feminine energy to take the lead". —Christa Assad, artist statement for MOTIVE

"The series is based on the idiom “Pigs in a Poke”.  In the late Middle Ages when meat was scarce, it was not uncommon for unscrupulous butchers to replace pork with the meat of other, less desirable animals like cats and dogs.  Unsuspecting customers would eventually discover they had been fooled.  When expanded, this phrase can refer to accepting an idea or a plan without fully understanding all of the details and ramifications.

Pigs in a Poke is appropriate when used a metaphor for the current U.S. administration that peddles promises that it cannot deliver and regularly presents fiction as fact.  The joke is on the American people who will suffer at the hands of such irresponsible leadership.  The joke is on the global communities that are directly impacted by misguided U.S. policies.    Our president is the butcher, compromising the fabric of the constitution in order to advance a personal agenda that places his wellbeing ahead of the people he represents.  Those who voted for our current president did not fully inspect the product before handing him and his surrogates the keys to the most powerful nation in the world.  The cat is out of the bag." —David Burke
