Agora Gallery is pleased to announce On Earth and Elsewhere, a group exhibition on view January 4th through January 24th, 2019.

On Earth and Elsewhere takes as its point of departure two of the most significant themes in Western art: namely, the landscape and the human face. Taken together, the ten artists on exhibit offer up a meditative vista regarding how individuals and groups experience their relationship to the earth. Operating in a predominantly figurative mode, the exhibition moves through different vantage points of art history—from the tenor of aristocratic feudalism to the modern reality of the city.

Most of the works on view are rendered using acrylic paint. This quick-drying, plastic-like medium is representative of the intentionality underlying each work. Alluding to historical themes, each work nevertheless speaks to the sensation of duress characteristic of contemporary society. An attitude of distress regarding climate change, the status of feminism, and the histories which might be lost to rising water levels permeates the exhibition. This mood of concern is brought home by the way each work seems to posit an exclusive either/or: viewers see either a human figure, or a beatific landscape unsullied by the intervention of man-made innovation.

On Earth and Elsewhere opens at January 4, 2019, and will be on display until January 24, 2019, with an opening reception on Thursday,  January 10th, 6-8 PM. All are welcome to attend. Entrance to the gallery is free.
