Universal Language, the first comprehensive exhibition by New Jersey-based artist Matt Colagiuri will be on view at La MaMa Galleria May 10 – 26, 2018. An opening reception will be held on Thursday, May 10th from 6 – 8pm.  The exhibition will consist of over 30 of Colagiuri’s sculptural photography works which explore the subject of love and its many manifestations in contemporary life. A portion of proceeds from the sale of works will be donated to The Sound of Gol Foundation.

Colagiuri’s work consists of photographic images mounted on backgrounds of varying heights to weave a narrative that is as complex and revealing as his innovative technique. For this exhibition, the artist explores the subject of love and how it manifests in many different forms - playful, nostalgic, passionate, even unrequited - to encompass the countless facets of contemporary life.

In his work Colagiuri deconstructs the familiar in order to re-present it in a manner that challenges the senses.  Using photographs that he has taken himself of people, objects, and neon signs, he dismantles the images into pixel-like sections of various sizes and mounts them on blocks of different heights, finally coating them in resin to create what resembles a topographical map of today’s vernacular. Informed by his background in different fields such as animation and theatre, the artist combines the photographic medium with a sculptural element to engage with the viewer, asking them to reconsider the way they view the world around them.
