Amos Eno Gallery is pleased to present Status Pending, an exhibition of new paintings by Robert A. McCann on view from August 29 through September 22nd at the gallery’s location on the main floor at 56 Bogart Street in Brooklyn, NY.  An opening reception will be held on Friday, September 6 from 6-9 PM. An artist talk will take place on Saturday, September 21 at 2 PM in conjunction with Bushwick Open Studios.

In his second solo show at Amos Eno, McCann mines popular media, memory and fantasy to construct layered, evocative images.  In the fundamentally fictional space of the painted surface, each work seeks a peculiar visual logic.  McCann’s paintings portray the human condition through a lens of ever-widening and disjointed frames of reference.  “Status Pending” refers to the uncertainty and immediacy of contemporary convenience.  

The paintings synthesize unstable elements of the modern world, reflecting on public personas and private life, the spillover between entertainment and reality, and the warped comforts of nostalgia.  The stage and screen emerge as recurring motifs to reconcile ambiguous internal and external conflicts.  Conceived and created over an eight month span, the paintings ramble from aging metal gods and pop stars to YouTube duelists to political scenes and personal moments.  Like the art of painting itself, the work seeks to live in this moment while carrying a kaleidoscopic archaeological sample history with it.

Artist ( Description ): 

Robert A. McCann is an artist and educator born and raised in the Ozarks of southwest Missouri.  Awarded a Fulbright fellowship for study in Germany in 2001, McCann has exhibited his artwork extensively across the United States since that time. Recent venues of solo exhibition include the University of Arkansas Galleries in Little Rock, the Grand Rapids Art Museum, and the South Bend Museum of Art.  He will debut another group of recent work at Artlink in Fort Wayne, Indiana in November 2019.  McCann teaches in the Department of Art, Art History & Design at Michigan State University.
