Sabìr limitless journey

Luigia d'Alfonso and Ada Perla are encouraging us to "navigate". They suggest a journey through recognizable, symbolic elements that coexist with signs and abstract forms, flowing or halting in color, in which each work, each vision, is dedicated to a theme.

The artists, after following individual paths, decided in 2002 to share a studio, and their daily relationship stimulated them to start a new adventure together. The dialogue, fertile ground of their work, has shaped a conceptual construction whose origin is in the surname that binds them, Perla. The research on the pearl has connected their respective aesthetic and existential experiences. The image has slowly changed from an exogenous element to an inner suggestion that has allowed the authors to reach a common language: the Sabìr, chosen in allusion to the ancient, free and unwritten language of brokerage once spoken in the Mediterranean harbors. The creative process of the artistic duo dap does not include preparatory sketches but individual thematic explorations that come together in their four-hand work. The experimentation of different pictorial techniques has been essential to achieve the expressive harmony between the artists and create a correspondence between concept and language. The pictorial stratification on dismissed fabrics that still store the time thickness of their past, starts from a careful choice of colors. The unique "mixed" technique that the artists have developed is fundamental in the phase of color layering because the absorption is immediate and this implies also the acceptance of every single unintentional brush stroke that the fabric takes over as if it had its own soul. The long and delicate assemblage is carried out with intangible gauzes, to complete the void left by the "missing words".

Artist ( Description ):

Luigia d'Alfonso was born in 1967 in Rome where she has always lived and worked, ranging from jewelry design to textile design with cross-over into theater. After collaborating with a cultural foundation specialized in ancient Roman studies, Luigia worked at “Il Punto” - Center of Contemporary Art. Since 2002 she has shared an atelier of art and handicraft with Ada Perla. In 2014 it was born the artistic duo dap – d’Alfonso, Perla, a partnership focused on the accomplishment of the four-handed project for the creation of Sabìr.

Ada Perla was born in Rome in 1960, studied art since high school and graduated in art history. After her college graduation she published some articles on journals specialized in historical-artistic studies. Ada worked as a graphic designer for agencies and theaters, and since 2002 she has shared an atelier of art and handicraft with Luigia d'Alfonso. In 2014 they started an adventure that led the artistic duo towards a common language: Sabìr.

The Sabìr created by dap - Luigia d'Alfonso and Ada Perla are back in New York

Secret Essence of Italy is proud to announce the great return of two fantastic Italian artists to New York. The solo exhibition of the artistic duo dap will take place at Time Art Gallery, in the heart of the West Village, from January 10 to 16.

Following the warm welcome that the "Big Apple" reserved for them in 2019, the Sabìr and Totem painted by Luigia and Ada return to be exhibited in the city.

The artworks by dap with their signs, their colors invite the viewer to "listen" and enjoy a visual storytelling that starting from a theme evolves into an individual journey that has no limits of time and space.

As noted by Roberto Savi, curator and admirer of the Sabìr: "Luigia d'Alfonso and Ada Perla invite us to "navigate", they suggest a journey through recognizable, symbolic elements, which coexist with signs and abstract forms, fluid or halted by color, in which each work, each vision, is dedicated to a theme".

The exhibition runs January 10-16, 2022 at Time Gallery, 178 Bleecker Street, New York.

The Gallery is open daily from 11 am to 2 pm.
