This February, Fort Houston is proud to present Selected Memory, a new exhibition featuring the photography of Angelina Castillo. The gallery will hold an open reception on the evening of Saturday, February 3rd, from 6 to 9pm, in conjunction with the Wedgewood-Houston Art Crawl. The exhibition will continue through February 24th, 2018.
The thematic precipice between documenation and depiction, while inherent in all forms of artistic media, is perhaps most prevalent in photography, given its natural depth of similitude. Selected Memory explores just this; Castillo’s utilization of her work as a path to personal rememberance —for all the medium’s allowance in the way of likeness— contrasted with the natural limitations of her lens —and therefore, the need for selectivity. Each frame is equally as truthful, and as deceptive, as our memories themselves. Through viewership, an additional layer materializes; each photograph is offered as a new experience, outside of its original context, which in turn inspires new relevance.
“These are especially beautiful things I've seen and been fortunate enough to burn into my brain in a way that has made me treasure them forever … I’d like other people to find the beauty in these moments [as well]. If I ask to take someone's photo, I'll always have that interaction with them in my heart and my mind, and if I'm able to remember how the light looked, I'm usually able to remember what we talked about, and how it felt and how the day was. Taking a photo of a place or person lets me find a little home inside myself for that moment, to love it always.” - Angelina Castillo
