Where is the beauty in something that is ordinary, humdrum, tedious? The artists in The New Domestics, Finding Beauty in the Mundane, have found unique answers as they incorporate archetypal domestic materials which questions identity and the meaning of “women’s work.” Working in everything from thread to steel, the artists in The New Domestics call forth the medium's inherent qualities and use it to construct elemental forms that balance gracefully between rawness and restraint. This is art that stimulates nostalgia and empathy and jars our senses. Art that struggles with social and environmental concerns and explores themes that revolve around the symbolic struggles inherent in the human condition. There are allusions to society's love of materialism at the cost of natural resources; there is a fascination with the effect of time and memory upon domestic and public issues.
