In July Partners Gallery is exhibiting Rachel Binah’s hand sewn paper constructions and collages in a show called Depressionism.

“Depressionism is an art movement for our times,” says Binah. “ I know I’m not alone in experiencing overwhelming sadness, pain, and difficulty in coping. There is little relief.  Is there no end to Covid? To war? To mass shootings? Everywhere there is a sense of futility, overwhelming loss, confusion, despair, disappointment, isolation, fearfulness.

During this time of troubles I've had the solace of being able to express myself through my art-- drawing, creating collages, sewing constructions.  Some of these new works came out of my sadness about the disintegration of our physical world ("Mending Ice") and my grief at the death of my sister ("The Phases of Her Many Moons”)( Where Are You Now”).  Another expresses the fragility of peace.

I’m hopeful that we will survive these grievous and chaotic times and be able to express our gratitude and positivity.”

There is a Second Saturday Meet the Artist, July 9, 5-7pm

Hours are Thursday through Monday from 11 – 5pm.
