Date:

Opening:

The rhinoceros is a metaphor for the frightening, inner turmoil, residing inside each of us, that place where we do not want to go. It is the inner being-a powerful, prehistoric animal that despite its strength is a fragile, vulnerable, endangered creature. Artist Lauren Evans uses images of the rhinoceros as metaphors, which she explains, “represents the adversary and ally we hold inside our own consciousness,” and employs text to draw the viewer in. She creates unique digital prints and sculpture/installations to explore these unexpected connections.

Artist ( Description ):

Lauren Evans is a visual, Los Angeles-based artist who works in a variety of techniques including sculpture and digital media. Reoccurring themes include metaphors that depict childhood labeling, and our human struggles with control. Her work frequently deals with the formation of childhood and the incredible difficulties that can be encountered in that process of growth. Her work combines the apparent innocent objects of youth with items of the everyday world and with text in ways that are evocative of that particularly vulnerable time. She received her MFA with an emphasis in sculpture from the USC Roski School of Art and Design. She has exhibited nationally with recent exhibitions including “In Harm’s Way” at Central Booking in New York City, “Beautiful Plant” at El Camino College in Torrance CA and “The Brain” at the New York Hall of Science in New York City.  She has partnered with artist Margaret Lazzari on several permanent public art projects in Los Angeles, Santa Monica, and Huntington Beach. Currently they are working on a piece for the City of Palmdale to be completed in the Fall of 2017. Lauren is full time art faculty at Los Angeles Southwest College.
