SoLA Gallery will host a solo show featuring recent works by artist Kate Carvellas in gallery 2. Concurrently, exhibiting in the main gallery, SoLA Gallery will host Pulse of LA 2019, the second annual juried exhibit showcasing the work of Los Angeles women artists.
Los Angeles-based artist, Kate Carvellas, will have both sculpture and mixed media pieces on display, curated by the director of SoLA Gallery, Peggy Sivert Zask. All of these pieces were created within the last year and will be on view for the first time.
Carvellas creates art using recognizable and not so recognizable objects she finds on the ground, at yard sales, in thrift stores and at flea markets. Using found objects recycles cast-off materials while also making an environmental statement, inviting everything from vintage photographs to wooden boxes to metal hardware to “speak” to one another within their compositions. She builds unexpected juxtapositions between the objects and the other materials she uses to see how their new relationships change the way we see them. Often, she adds painted passages as counterpoints to the three-dimensional forms.
Carvellas states: “My work is both intuitive and material based. I love using unexpected materials, especially objects that others might consider unusable and by incorporating them in my work I elevate them from their original state, giving them new life and meaning.”
