Peter Michelena - curator

www.petermichelena.com

Peter Michelena is a Los Angeles based photographer and fine artist. Peter grew up in

a house filled with art and design, where aesthetics were important and creativity was

encouraged. Drawing was Peter's first form of creative expression, which soon led to

painting, but it was not until he was a student at Art Center College of Design that he

added photography to his repertoire. Michelena's professional career began while he

was still in school and soon his work was being featured on movie posters and on

magazine and CD covers. In 2000, he opened Melrose Lightspace, a West Hollywood

creative space for photo shoots, art exhibitions, performance events, workshops

and Sunday morning figure drawing classes.

In addition to his commercial photography, Peter's fine art continues to evolve as a combination

of alternative photographic processes and abstract painting. Original pieces and

high quality, limited edition digital prints are available through the artist and commissions

are welcome. When not in the studio or on location, Peter likes to surf and swim, or you

might just find him walking in his Larchmont neighborhood, his dog Daisy leading the way.

Michael Britt - Guest Judge

In addition to being the Director of Education for all the Samy’s Camera stores, Michael is also an instructor.

When Michael came to Los Angeles with his wife, actress Cheryl White, he started as a unit stills photographer on film and TV which kept him busy for over a decade. In 1995 he purchased his first Apple computer and discovered a passion and inherent aptitude for digital photography. This quickly earned him a fantastic reputation in the emerging digital photography space and he soon found himself as the consultant to high end photographers converting to digital.

All of his experience; technical, creative and marketing culminated in the creation of Image Mechanics where Michael was managing partner until 2009. It was during his development of the brand for his new business that he was tapped as a writer/speaker for digital imaging workflow and archiving. Some of his speaking credits include; Thomas Knoll’s Soup-To-Nuts, PDN On the Road (5 city tour), PIDE, Imaging USA, and the Digital Media Festival in Sydney Australia. He was also asked consult for the tech industry and he wrote the manual that shipped with Adobe Light Room 1.0. He is a certified digital photography expert for the State of California Community College system where he was instrumental in developing a Digital Tech program for Cypress College where he is on the advisory board. He is also on the board of the Santa Monica College photo program.

As someone who sees technological shifts coming, Michael co-produced the critically acclaimed Collision Conference, the very first event focusing on the collision of stills and motion, bringing together speakers like Shane Hurlbut ASC, Rodney Charters and Vincent Laforet for the first time. He followed up the Collision Conference with the PhotoCine Expo which focused exclusively on video DSLR filmmaking. His recent projects include a book co-written with Lou Lesko for Cengage publishing called Photocine: Digital Filmmaking with DSLRs.
