The History of LA ArtCore

The core of LA Artcore evolved out of the social and artistic interactions of students in at Cal State LA’s fine arts department, under the tutelage of Lydia Takeshita during 1960’s and 1970’s. Students would meet regularly outside of class to discuss what would become a cumulative involvement in Downtown LA’s aesthetic movement of the late-70’s, 80’s and early-90’s, and its budding fine arts culture.

Following her Cal State LA tenure, Ms. Takeshita and many of her students relocated their activities to Downtown and established a gallery space on San Mateo street in what is now the Arts District. LA Artcore was formally incorporated as a 501-c3 nonprofit corporation in 1979. During the 1980’s, Takeshita and LA Artcore produced numerous exhibits and along with an in-house publication entitled Visions Art Quarterly that brought local and regional coverage until 1991. Concurrently, Ms. Takeshita established LA Artcore’s International Exchange Program with then-visiting artists, Kamol Tassananchalee, Yoshio Ikezaki, and Nobu Kano, who have been longtime partners in this collaborative exchange that allows artists to travel and exihibit in a foreign country. Since then, LA Artcore has conducted exchange programs with Thailand, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Italy, San Luis Obispo, and Albuquerque.

In addition to its Downtown space Takeshita secured another gallery space in 1998 at the Brewery Arts Colony, a former Brewery transformed into the country’s largest live-work artist’s complex. This gallery space is still in operation today with regularly scheduled monthly art exhibits.

The History of South Bay Contemporary, SoLA Gallery

South Bay Contemporary started in 1990 when Artist and Founding director, Peggy Sivert Zask realized the South Bay needed more representation in the arts.  Starting Minus Zero Gallery in an empty shopping center space in Torrance, Sivert was joined by business woman Jo Ann Gaines to develop nonprofit, South Bay Contemporary Museum of Art.  After 7 years, the organization was closed due to need for full time jobs and family demands.

Following a career in art teaching and raising a family, Sivert re-entered the art scene, this time as Zask Gallery, and once again evolving into nonprofit, South Bay Contemporary founded in 2013. Following a total of 20 years of gallery business in the South Bay, SBC has gained permanent space in South Los Angeles by generous donation of patron/artist, Linda Jo Russell. SBC SoLA is building a new board and membership in its new home to bring together LA and South Bay artists.

SBC SoLA hosts multiple events each year including art exhibitions, performances, artist talks, critique groups, educational workshops and more. Each program combines contemporary art with topics related to outside disciplines such as science and humanities. Some of our past shows have focused on environmental consciousness, Native American activists, relationships between art and science, Object Oriented Ontology and more.  SBC has also hosted several International residencies with Sudrak Khongpuang and has upcoming exchange shows planned with Costa Rica and Japan.

SBC SoLA is a volunteer-run, non-profit art organization.  Our objective is to gather a community of artists and supporters who would like to collaborate and help establish programming in art education, exhibitions and events encompassing art of our contemporary culture.
