AFTER THE RAIN marks MARKO GAVRILOVIC’s second time exhibiting at MASH Gallery. His first appearance was via LUMEN, the August 2019 group exhibition, which highlighted the use of light and color in both 2D and 3D works of art. For his post-pandemic return to downtown Los Angeles, GAVRILOVIC stuns with paintings integrating intricate geometric detail, vividly intense color, and Escher-reminiscent perspectives drawing the viewer into Inception-like worlds that seem to expand and contract on the canvas, like a Hitchcockian lens trick.

AFTER THE RAIN is both metaphorical and literal, as GAVRILOVIC hints at the moment after the rain stops and the world is reborn and refreshed—a time of purification. And yet, rain can take the figurative forms of a rain of conspiracies or political rains as well as the rains of hope. His vision is of the tension between the relentless expansion of human civilization into the animal world and how the urbane and the wild vie for space and oftentimes, overlap. Gavrilovic’s goal is to shed light on human progress reflected in the heights and glass of architectural monuments, while the organic world of nature is never far away and will never disappear despite the consequences of humanity’s world-building.

GAVRILOVIC’s visual style employs elements of comic book art, stained glass complexity and saturated primary colors that showcase his finely tuned drawing skills. One is never done observing a work by Gavrilovic. The sheer detail of his work is borne of multiple sketches first in his artist’s journal which are then carefully recast to larger surfaces. The startling results depict a friction of the coexistence of the natural world and the fabricated ones—both beautiful and reverent.

Artist ( Description ):

Marko Gavrilovic was born in Belgrade, Serbia in 1975. He graduated from the Academy of Applied Arts and Design in 2001. In the following years, Gavrilovic has practiced acrylics, sculpture, design, illustration, and drawings. He opened a design studio in 2002, and with his team, during the years, Gavrilovic created more than 200 light – designed pieces. He is known for his works of the bull and city painting series as well as plastic sculptural lighting forms, which naturally has led him to the point where art and design cross their paths.

Gavrilovic has represented Serbia with his painting ” Unbeatable” at the International Global 2010 Fine Art Exhibition for the FIFA World Cup, an art event dedicated to lovers both of art and sports. In 2015 he represented Serbia at Milan EXPO with his light installation “Circle of Light. Up until now, he has had 20 solo exhibitions and more than 80 group shows.
Marko uses light and industrial materials to create formally innovative sculptures and drawings inspired by natural shapes.
Gavrilovic is motivated by his interest in human and animal forms, which he represents through assemblages of loose, colored scraps of cut and polished Plexiglas that resemble modernist biomorphic shapes. Gavrilovic likens his creative process to the act of assembling a puzzle, describing it as an imaginative system rooted in intuitive and fast-paced decision-making.
