March brings painter Kelly Ording’s much anticipated exhibition, “An Unseen World”.  Ording’s meditative works on dyed paper and canvas are exercises in precise line making, demonstrating a balance between the organic and meticulous. These linear paintings draw on internalized and abstracted landscapes as well as geometric compositions. Each painting is intentional and intuitive as she successfully pushes the traditional limits of minimalism and representation. Ording’s large-scale works can be found in many public settings including Facebook headquarters and throughout the Bay area.

Artist ( Description ):

Kelly Ording is an Oakland California based painter whose work encompasses a broad palette and a wide range of media. From muted tones to vibrant colors, pen and ink drawings to paintings, each piece intentionally pushes the limits of minimalism and representation. Employing simple repetition, geometric patterns and marking to evoke represented subjects to the viewer, Ording strikes the balance between representational and minimal compositions. Ording’s use of dyed canvas and paper takes the paintings beyond a purely abstract image by creating depth and nuance. In addition to exhibiting her paintings worldwide, Ording has numerous large-scale public works throughout the Bay area and internationally including San Francisco’s landmark Clarion Alley and Palega Park Recreation Center.

Artist Statement:

The artwork created for “An Unseen World” include two varying styles; abstracted landscapes and mathematical, geometric works. Although both types of work employ different approaches and achieve different outcomes, both contain meticulous line-work, and a bold use of color and shape. Inspired by the natural settings of California, the landscape-based works are the result of an intuitive process of modifying process, materials and composition. These portraits are, in truth, places that don’t truly exist except possibly in the imagination of the viewer. Alternatively, the geometric works are the result of pre-determined plans, compositions and studies of color and shape. Within all these works is an exploration of representation and minimalism, intuition and intention and a refinement of technique.
