Self-taught Dutch photographer Alex Timmermans' unexpected and clever photographs will be on display for the Thanksgiving Giving Walk. Timmermans’ is known for his usage Collodion wet-plate photography. This printing method imparts a sense of nostalgia while his imaginative subject matter explores modern themes such as the “selfie” and Brexit. Timmermans photographs succeed in giving us a humorous glimpse at our contemporary existence through the lens of the past.

“I always have been fascinated by photography.  But with the introduction of the digital camera it all became too easy, too predictable …to me.  So I forced myself to go back to the roots of real analog photography.  Not just by making the photograph itself, but by controlling the entire photographic process.

This brought me back to the middle of the 19th century, to the amazing Collodion wet plate process.  And every single day I feel challenged to refine and improve myself.”

~ Alex Timmermans

Artist ( Description ):

Dutch photographer Alex Timmermans is a storyteller. Known for his use of the collodion wet plate photography process, Timmermans creates enchanting images and like his fairy tale images, the process he employs is the antithesis to predictability; little twists of fate coming together for the final scene. Timmermans is a self-taught photographer who has practiced photography his entire life. However, when the change from analog to digital came about he found with it came predictability and less excitement. For Timmermans, working with the wet plate process made photography inspiring again. In a long tradition of photographers drawn to its unique aesthetic, such as Sally Mann, Joni Sterbach and the Ostermans, Timmermans uses this process to achieve unforgettable images that have a dreamy quality and an aura of mystery.
