Time Trap: Poetry into Painting consists of the days of the week series Sharkey painted as part of her on-going investigation into the pictorial depiction of time. What is unusual about these paintings, inspired by medieval books of the hours, is that the artist first conceived of them through writing poems, included in this exhibit, which were then translated into the highly saturated color fields of these sensual large-scale abstract paintings.

Virginia Sharkey is an abstract painter who has long been focused on finding the essential and the elemental. For the last several years her explorations have been concerned with the depicting of time, which, inspired by the medieval books of hours, has led her to convey the feeling tone of subjects like the four seasons and particular times of the day. Like symphonic tone poems, Time Traps, her latest exhibition at Partners Gallery in Ft Bragg, Ca, explores the visual sensations of the unit of time connoting each day of the week. What is especially intriguing in this particular series is the accompanying presentation of poems written by the artist prior to the actual creation in acrylic paint on linen, each poem serving as a drawing or sketch. These "road maps" very tangientially followed, will be presented on the wall along with these highly sensual, color saturated paintings.
For 18 years Partners Gallery in Fort Bragg has been a destination for contemporary art on the Northern California coast. The gallery is owned and managed by its 12 artists. Shows mounted monthly include one-person shows, invitationals, community and juried shows.
