Capitalism Sucks Art Show, Sandy Sanders, 2019, New Zone Featured Artist for November - Artist Statement

"In 2013, I performed an exhibit on the sidewalk outside the San Francisco Art Market fine art trade show event. This street art performance/installation was created to counter and reframe the premises for making and displaying art in relation to the existing commodity-based driven art world of the 21st Century. In this 2019 New Zone version of the show, I hope viewers will find humor, simplicity, straight forward communication and thoughtful reflection on the nature of "free" and "not free". There are free paintings. There are inexpensive archivally printed photographs. And there are incredibly expensive art worthy to hang in any oligarch’s drawing room parlor.

"This work is created with the purpose of engaging ordinary people in thinking about what is truly important in life rather than what is monetarily valuable. In this riches or bust Neo-Gilded Age capitalist society, the bottom 95% is being prosperity abandoned. Handmade art has become something most people only see in museums or galleries. And the museums are no longer free. In most cases, the idea of having a beautiful or meaningful work of art in one's living room has disappeared for all but those with thousands of dollars of disposable income. This installation pushes aside the idea of monetary value and explores the value of Free Culture as a value replacement over that of the capitalist profiteering free-for-all that plagues humanity in 2019.

"I hope this show aids in highlighting a public dialogue to envision a world where free takes precedence over debt."
