The search for the figure has inspired sculptor Marc Lancet’s artistic practice for decades. Harkening back to ancient goddess figures from prehistoric Europe, Japan, and pre-colonial wooden sculpture from Africa, Lancet builds totemic female figures on a grand scale. He works with wonder and mystery in the studio - with an inspired attention – aiming to imbue the works he creates with these qualities. He seeks paradoxically to surprise himself when he works, trusting instinct, celebrating whim and discouraging certainty and preordained planning. For Lancet the studio is where he goes to discover. In the process, he produces abstracted figures full of emotional depth. Equally emotive are Lancet’s ceramic masks, in which found objects add expressive facial features and wry character.  Each figure is fired using an ancient wood-firing process requiring three to seven days. Using wood-firing, wood ash, and temperature become paint and flames serve as Lancet’s brush. Elements of wood, clay, and fire combine, shift, and flux, creating spontaneous marks, hues, and textures on the sculpture surfaces.
