CONSCIOUS MIGRATION

Influenced by Paleolithic, Neolithic, and Bronze Age symbols, Quentin Moseley produces prints

and neon intended to examine the presence of sex, society, security, and time within humanity.

His series “Museum of Prehistory” is informed by visits to 8 Paleolithic painted and sculpted

caves in the Dordogne Valley of France and Spain, in addition to visits to Megalithic sites of

Brittany and the British Isles. Moseley received his BFA from the Syracuse School of Art in 1970,

later earning an MFA from the Hoffberger School of Painting in 1972. He has been a faculty

member at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) representing the Printmaking Department

since 1974 and has served as the Chair of both the Printmaking and Foundation Departments.

Moseley has created substantial commissioned installations for the exteriors of buildings in cities

including Miami, Portland (Maine), Philadelphia, Baltimore and Memphis.

Nancy Valk unearths inspiration through actions of weather and water. Referencing beach stones

and metallic scraps of what she calls “road art”, Valk examines the principal beauty in the

properties of these objects through her work. Her practice has an extensive connection to the

natural world, dating back to her childhood spent wandering through lakes and streams in

upstate New York. With a background in anthropology, she is captivated by artifacts and

bones—seen bearing a well-founded influence on her earlier ceramic work. Valk trained as a

physical anthropologist, studying at Cornell University. In the 1980’s she earned a reputation as

a nationally recognized ceramicist, but due to an injury she abruptly ended her career. Since

1988, she has established herself as a painter, utilizing watercolor, acrylic, and oil. Valk has

finessed her technique in portraiture and realism, but still maintains a healthy balance of intention

and accident in her practice.

Demonstrating an established array of skills, Jim Hake works with materials including wood,

metal, plaster, glass, as well as recycled and found materials. Following Graduate school, Hake

moved to Turin, Italy where he began working as a professional sculptor and instructor

primarily using the mediums of clay and porcelain. He has extensively shown his work

throughout Italy and Europe in distinguished cities including Milan, Bologna, Venice, Lugano,

Stockholm, and London. Hake is now based in Toronto and regularly visits Baltimore. He

received a BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art in Sculpture, while also studying at

the California College of Arts and Crafts. After graduation, Hake worked as an artist in

residence at Millersville University in Pennsylvania and in 1994 completed an MA at California

State University in Sacramento, later earning an MFA in Sculpture at the Henry Redford Hope

School of Fine Arts, Indiana University, Bloomington in 1996.
