Artist Statement

I stand in defiance of politicians and the entertainment-news media that profits from fanning fears in order to divide humanity and ignore the perils of climate change. In reality we have a shared experience, in a shared home.

I want to disrupt the usual gaze and engage the viewer in a visceral experience. Nature unites us all because we are of nature, and life is so dear.

The worst stung heart can find healing when standing in the mystery of the life force of nature. We are not separate from nature. We will not come to understanding in isolation. The new growth of the rhododendron shoots forth from dying blossoms.  There is no separation.

I lean back into the wagon of beauty finding homecoming in the wholeness of nature. I don’t want to paint nature as it looks. Photographs are better at that. I want to create paintings that listen as well as look, that feel more than illustrate, that are the experience of being in an intense, vibrant eco-system. Like relaxing into the company of a friend, they are vessels for spirit. As an artist, I am both garden and gardener.
