MOTH MIGRATION PROJECT
The Moth Migration Project is a crowd-sourced exhibition of hand printed, drawn and cut paper moths. Hilary Lorenz began the project in her Brooklyn, New York studio in January 2017 and it will premier at 516Arts, Albuquerque, NM, August 19, 2017. Choosing moths, a nocturnal pollinator, as the vehicle for cross-pollination and international exchange, Lorenz put out a call for participation on social media, inviting people to create paper moths native to their geographic location. Through social media and personal relationships, the moths became a symbol of community as the project branched into satellite exhibitions, printmaking workshops, school art projects, and family and community gatherings.
The project has fostered an international cross-pollination of ideas and community building. As facilitator, Lorenz meticulously cataloged each submission into a database. In addition, she created and continues to moderate a Facebook Moth Migration Group, where people cultivate relationships and share photographs of their moths and personal experience. Pollination is reciprocal with Lorenz mailing each participant a specifically-designed postcard recognizing their contribution and acknowledging the value of their collaboration.
In the gallery exhibition each paper moth's placement represents how the project digitally pollinated. The visual effect of the massive installation is a migration map representing artists from twenty-four countries and their connection with the project.
Hilary Lorenz is a NY-based multidisciplinary artist who explores intersections of running, nature, and solitude in large printed and cut paper installations. Her recent solo exhibitions include Birding, Brooklyn Bridge Park, NY (2016); Lean-to-Me, Lake George Courthouse Gallery, NY (2015); Nomadic Geography, Wave Hill, Bronx, NY (2014); Lorenz was an artist-in-residence at LMCC Governors Island, NY, (2016), National Seashore C-Scape, Provincetown, MA (2008, 2016); and is the USA representative for the Chilkoot Trail Residency, Parks Canada and Yukon Arts Center 2018. She is an NEA and Fulbright Fellow. Lorenz received an MA and MFA from the University of Iowa.

516 ARTS presents Cross Pollination, a group exhibition showcasing work at the intersection of art and science that focuses on bees and other pollinators. About 35 percent of the world’s food crops and 75 percent of the flowering plants depend on pollinators to reproduce. Pollinators, including bees, moths and butterflies and birds, have become increasingly threatened by human action. With this knowledge, artists have responded to the issue by working with and for pollinators to raise awareness about their profound benefits to life on earth. Curated by artist/backyard beekeeper Valerie Roybal, with Claude Smith and Aimee Gwynne Franklin, Cross Pollination not only refers to how bees and other insects pollinate a large portion of the world’s food, but also to the cross pollination of ideas in art and science. The exhibition includes local, national and international artists working in painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture, installation, film/video, performance, and more.
