COSMOS: Embroidery Circle and Readings led by Cecilia Charlton  

An embroidery workshop led by Cecilia Charlton who will be performing readings from art, science and cultural writers exploring the cosmos and fate whilst participants are invited to embroider in response to the texts and her large-scale textile triptych Eternal myth and the poetry of the cosmos [fate, future, suture].    

Format 

This event will last for four hours and offers the chance to learn embroidery skills alongside a small group of participants. This event is open to all abilities.  

Materials will be provided and visitors are welcome to take breaks throughout the event. Water and fruit will be available as free refreshments.  

There is limited capacity at this event, so we ask that you let us know as soon as possible if you are no longer able to attend. We will run a waiting list for tickets if they sell out and will be in touch if tickets become available in the run-up to the event.

We encourage all visitors to take a COVID-19 lateral flow test before visiting our galleries at Jerwood Space and only to attend if it is negative.

The space will be well ventilated, our staff members will be wearing personal protective equipment and there will be hand sanitiser available on arrival. 

Please do not attend if you or anyone you live with is feeling unwell or displaying symptoms consistent with COVID-19 even if you receive a negative lateral flow test result.

About the artist 

Cecilia Charlton is a London-based American artist. She received a BFA in Painting in 2015 from Hunter College in NYC and an MA Painting from the Royal College of Art in 2018. Charlton’s work draws on her upbringing as the daughter of a seamstress, utilising textile processes to explore the effects of abstraction, geometric pattern, colour and composition. Recent projects include Love Token, a commission for Robert Young Antiques, London, UK (2021) and a series of textile workshops with 55+ Ilford residents, which culminated in the solo exhibition Mammoth Loop, SPACE Studios, Ilford, UK (2021-22). Charlton has exhibited in the UK and internationally; her recent exhibitions include: Aurora, Candida Stevens Gallery, Chichester, UK (2020, solo); Parade, curated by Kris Day, Broadway Gallery, Letchworth Garden City, UK (2019); Tender Touches, curated by Ines Neto dos Santos and Huma Kabakci of Open Space Contemporary, AMP Gallery, London, UK (2019); and SURGE: the Eastwing Biennial, Courtauld Institute, London, UK (2018). ceciliacharlton.com
