Overview

Join us for a special conversation accompanying Howard Hodgkin: In a Public Garden, exploring Howard Hodgkin’s influence on a younger generation of artists and curators. This panel brings together two voices who have, in different ways, been influenced by his work: Shanay Jhaveri, Head of Visual Arts at the Barbican, and artist Hannah Perry.

In this one-hour discussion, Jhaveri will draw on his extensive scholarship on Hodgkin, including his essay for the catalogue of Howard Hodgkin’s Indian Waves (Gagosian, 2014) and his earlier interview with the artist for the landmark volume Western Artists and India. Hannah Perry will reflect on her own practice and on being selected by the Whitechapel Gallery in 2014 to create work in tribute to Hodgkin when he was honoured as their first Swarovski Art Icon—an event celebrating Hodgkin’s achievement and influence in contemporary art.

Together, they offer rare insight into Hodgkin’s impact across generations: from his rich dialogue with India and cross-cultural exchange to formal influences and approaches to art making that resonate with contemporary artists working today.

The event will be chaired by Richard Parry, Head of Programmes, Pitzhanger Manor & Gallery.
