The Fine Arts are notorious for their lack of representation for women. With female artists less likely to have work sold through a gallery or achieve the highest sums at auction. The situation is changing and Her Art-Story celebrates the achievements of successful women working in the arts.
Her Art-Story is a series of intimate conversations between invited female artists and curators intended to provide inspiration to negotiate your own path in the art world or at the least have a greater understanding of female practitioners breaking new ground. All the artists at the forefront of their field share how they developed their practice and professional career and offer straightforward advice. Her Art-Story and the Nunnery `Gallery are delighted to invite you to listen to a conversation between Cathy Lomax, artist and gallerist and artist Cathie Pilkington RA.
Cathie Pilkington is an artist whose work engages passionately and critically with the canonical history of figurative sculpture. Crossing the borders of traditional, modern and contemporary idioms, her work combines intensively modelled and painted sculptures within immersive installations comprising a diverse array of props, materials and studio furniture. Her site-responsive installations are balanced ambivalently between chaos and precision and have been described as a kind of art historical fly-tipping.She studied at Edinburgh College of Art (1986-91)and The Royal College of Art (1995-97). She was elected Royal Academician in 2014. In 2016 she became professor of Sculpture at the Royal Academy Schools. Her upcoming show The Covering opens at Karsten Schubert on 14th February 2020.
Bow Arts seeks to support creative professionals at all stages of their careers. In 2015 Bow Arts launched Bow Skills in response to an artist survey which showed over 90% of practicing artists find it useful to receive further support outside formal education. Bow Skills is a dynamic and relevant programme of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) which is informed by an artist steering group and open to all creative practitioners across London. The programme of talks, panel discussions, new skills labs and peer crits is open to all, with concession rates available to Bow Arts artists and students.

About Cathy Lomax
Cathy Lomax is a London based artist and winner of the 2016 Contemporary British Painting Prize. On completing a MA in Fine Art at Central St Martins in 2002 she set up Transition Gallery in East London. She also edits two art and culture magazines, Arty and Garageland. In 2016 Lomax started a PhD at Queen Mary University of London, researching the role of makeup in the creation of the female film star image. Her artwork assimilates the seductive imagery of film, fame and fashion and juxtaposes it with personal narratives and the everyday. Her resulting paintings and installations play with history by combining influences from disparate sources to form new groupings and categories.
