Artists help 10 year celebrations for Aylesbury Estate Charity

Could you use the Aylesbury estate as your muse ? This was the question the Creation Trust asked writers, performers, poets and artists over the last year as part of their 10 year celebrations.

The charity were keen to explore how the estate’s reputation and brutalist architecture inspired & influenced people.  Collected writings have now been published in a book entitled, “Several Storeys” and will be accompanied by an exhibition at the ASC Gallery that operates from one of the blocks on the estate.

Four artists were asked to design a collector’s edition cover for the estate based magazine, the Echo, including Martin Grover. West Norwood based Martin is known for his wonderful screen prints of South London landmarks and was only too keen to spend a day on the estate sketching. He has kindly donated 30 signed prints that Creation will sell to fund their annual Xmas hamper campaign. He chose the only pub on the estate for his piece.

Chief Executive Charlotte Benstead said“Every year we identify 100 of the most vulnerable households on the estate and hand deliver a hamper to help with the expense of Christmas. With funding being tight we are delighted to be able to raise money through this art work. “

Other contributing artists include:

  • Ed Gray who has captured many local street scenes including the famous Threadneedle man, George Dyer the tailor on Walworth Rd.
  • David Hepher who is celebrating a retrospective of his work at the Flowers gallery, that includes large canvasses of the estate.
  • Walworth resident & photographer Eva Sajovic with works that include portraits taken in the Elephant and Castle shopping centre.

The exhibition “Several Storeys” runs from the 23rd -29th March at ASC Gallery
