The exhibition commences with an exquisite bronze by Jean-Jacques Feuchère, cast in 1833. This early piece sets the stage for an exploration of pivotal moments in sculpture, including works by Alfred Boucher (circa 1891-1894), Edgar Degas (conceived between 1882 and 1895), and Auguste Rodin, with his evocative "Shade" conceived in 1880. These masterpieces illustrate the rich tradition and technical prowess of 19th-century sculpture.
Transitioning to the 20th century, the gallery highlights seminal modern sculptors who redefined the medium. Visitors will encounter the dynamic forms of Henry Moore alongside Lynn Chadwick’s striking pieces from the early 1990’s. Notably, the stand features monumental works by Ossip Zadkine, conceived in 1966, showcasing the bold experimentation that characterizes modern sculpture.
Bowman Sculpture Gallery also celebrates contemporary artists, presenting works by Emily Young, Tony Cragg, and Hanneke Beaumont. These artists continue to push the boundaries of sculpture, each bringing a unique vision and innovative approach to the medium, ensuring its relevance and vibrancy in today's art world.
This collection, spanning nearly two centuries, offers a rare opportunity to witness the evolution of sculptural art from classical techniques to contemporary innovations. Visitors to the Bowman Sculpture Gallery stand at Frieze Masters 2024 will experience a rich tapestry of artistic expression, reflecting the enduring power and versatility of sculpture.
