‘From Tyne to Kamo’ is a cross-cultural exchange between artists, seeking to uncover the bedrock of their culture and identity, from Tyne and Wear, England, to Kyoto, Japan.

The exhibition is coordinated by Low Res Collective, a collective of artists based in the North East of England, whose goal is to increase access for emerging and experimental local artists. For this exhibition at Vane, they have collaborated with Orbis Community Print Workshop in Gateshead to create a series of new work.

Having collaborated with local venues for previous events and exhibitions, for this exhibition they have partnered with Art Spot Korin, near the Kamo river in Kyoto, Japan, to bring work by Japanese artists to Vane gallery, Gateshead, close to the River Tyne. A reciprocal exhibition of artists from the UK and Japan will take place at Art Spot Korin, Kyoto, also in late January.

Participating artists have gathered source material from their respective cities to inspire the artwork, capturing an essence of a specific time and place. The exchange sets out to discover what parallels there are in our everyday lives, contrasted against the distinct differences that are found within our experiences of the mundane across cultures, creating a dialogue for future collaborations.
