THE NAKED AND FAMOUS

Categories:

The Brick Lane Gallery – The Annexe presents an eclectic mix of contemporary painting, photography and illustration in our next ART IN MIND exhibition – THE NAKED AND FAMOUS.

Josep French creates creates beautiful urban city landscapes painted from an elevated perspective and with clear influences of architectural drawings and planning. With a similar inspiration coming from the urban landscape and the concrete jungle of great metropolis cities, Mark Allnut's drawings are not maps, but are intended to evoke the atmosphere and experience of seeing them instead of reading them. Rather than particular geographic features being represented, the complexity of the relationships of the component units -people, buildings, vehicles, vegetation is conveyed.

THE NAKED AND FAMOUS will present a range of abstract artists including French born Artist David Lasry, who reflects his daily encounters as well as his interaction with literature and philosophy in his art. Using mixed mediums, his forms, colours and materials are a means for the artist to comprehend human nature in abstract form.

Another abstract painter, Iva Rizzi's uses bold earthly tones to create abstract paintings which pulsate from the canvas. Similarly  German artist, Ulrike Hensel creates paintings which are dominated by natural forms reflecting the artists general love of nature – plants, gardens and landscapes. In contrast to Iva's flowing abstract style, the effect of Ulrike Hensel's paintings is instead similar to that of woodcut prints, where her abstract forms have sharp 'cut-out' edges creating an overall edgy contemporary style.

Working in a completely different medium, digital photographic artist, Tom Gilbert creates images which are a means to visually adapt and explore the DIY experimentation of musicians such as Sonic Youth, Christina Carter, Marcia Bassett, and the Michigan Underground Group. The result is overlapping images, colours and light which ultimately breakdown any subject matter into pure abstraction.

Working more figuratively, self-taught Gisella Stapleton is particularly influenced by her Peruvian upbringing and brings South American themes to her paintings through the depiction of ordinary people, including farm workers, street musicians and local women.

And in contrast to each of the artists in this exhibition, Belgium illustrator Yohan Sacre will present a series of quirky illustrations which mimic childhood characters, but juxtapose this innocent style with darker forms – nightmares, monsters and images of death. With this contrast of images and emotions, he is allowing the viewer to create their own story.

You are warmly invited to meet the artists and attend the opening night of ART IN MIND | THE NAKED AND FAMOUS on Wednesday 17th July 6pm - 8.30pm.
