The Squirrel, a digital art installation that was commissioned for Unnatural Borders, by Quays Culture, will this year travel to Light Up Poole 2018, the first Light Festival to take place in Poole. It will stand among 12 other installations, lighting the way from the area’s Falklands Square to the Quays.

Originally created by Netherlands-based Sober Industries, and commissioned by Quays Culture for its Unnatural Borders exhibition, at Salford Quays: the home of MediaCityUK, The Squirrel explores the interaction and impact between human civilisation and the animal kingdom environment, highlighting the extinction plight of the Red Squirrel.  When first unveiled The Squirrel stood alongside a Polar bear, Bee and Whale, towering over the public on large separate plinths.  The structures were illuminated after sunset to show stunning visual projections, bringing a magical show of light and illusion to these 3D animals and their location.  This year, Quays Culture have partnered with artist David Lynch, who has created the projections that will light up The Squirrel at Light Up Poole 2018.

From the 15th to the 17th February 2018, the town centre of Poole will provide the dramatic backdrop to a series of light art and digital installations, including The Squirrel, designed to inspire, delight and enchant locals and visitors.  International and local artists, many of them working in collaboration with Poole schools and arts organisations, have been given a platform to showcase their often ground breaking work in a celebration of Poole’s cultural diversity, rich heritage and unique location.

Quays Culture delivers outdoor arts and cultural events, combining the latest in digital and cutting edge technology with the vision of world-class artists throughout the year. Its work ranges from the intimate to the monumental, acting as a series of interventions and invitations to the public realm.  Sober Industries is a multi-disciplinary creative production company specialising in the development and realisation of creative concepts and projects.
