Colours as means to rewire your mental health explored by a duo group art show in Hampstead

‘Why be normal when you can be happy’ is a duo group art show at the Peggy Jay Gallery of the historical Burgh’s House that will bring a pop of colour to the community of Hampstead this summer. Inspired by Jeanette Winterson’s book ‘Why be happy when you can be normal’, this vibrant exhibition is about the happiness we all deserve after a life’s worth of struggles.

The exhibition will run from 21 August to 1 September and will capture the artists’ ‘joie de vivre’ philosophy through a series of colourful and lively paintings and interior design objects. Prioritising happiness and mental wellbeing, both artists see art as a vital way to introduce more joy into our homes.

The collective is formed by Francesca Zagari and Simona Puidokaite, two Europeans who have made London their home for the last 15 to 20 years. Both women lead successful careers in the visual fields: Simona as a graphic designer and Francesca as a visual merchandising and prop maker.

While the exhibition presents a lively, colourful exploration of the duo’s London journey, capturing their experiences and views through our artistic lenses, the artists also invite the visitors to explore how their own emotions and mental states are impacted by colours and shapes that surround us. ‘Colours may not have words, but they do speak to us’, - says the duo, and with that, encouraging a dialogue on how colours can bring joy, address wellbeing and open new ways to navigate complexities of our emotions.

The show will feature chic abstract paintings, coffee tables and trays, smaller interior design details and a delightful series of lollipops sculptures to reconnect with your long lost inner child.

The cheerful show will make for a rewarding detour after a long walk with your favourite pooch. Visitors will also be able to pick up some desirable objects for their home.

Artist ( Description ):

Francesca Zagari works with everyday objects and reconstructs different materials into playful artforms focusing on finishes, colour and textures. Along with the famous lollipop sculptures, she will also be showcasing her new resin collage artworks with real and imaginary worlds of individuals going about their day: shopping, swimming, or on their mobile phones. Her past group exhibitions include: ‘One for the Road’ at One Paved Road gallery in Richmond 2023, ‘Kaleidoscope’ at Berwick Brothers in Hertford 2021 and at the former Aeon Gallery on Heath Street in Hampstead between 2019 -2020.

Simona Puidokaite’s creative process leans towards the minimalist style, she chooses calculated elegance, slow rhythm and simplicity in her choice of shapes, lines and colours. Her work becomes a safe place to which she invites us to escape from the entangled chaotic life. Simona will present a new series of paintings filled with kaleidoscope of colours on natural linen and hand made paper inspired by her summer travels and joie de vivre energy of the season. Visitors will notice a small circle featured in each of her pieces. The artist reveals they actually represent herself, cheekily peeking out at the viewer and at the joyful and chaotic world around us. Following years of selling her art worldwide, this is her first exhibition in the UK.
