W O O D P O P Studio presents 'w o o d w o r k s’ – their first solo show, at London’s exuberant members club, Quo Vadis, Soho. Featuring a series of abstracts, landscapes and celebrity portraits, the exhibition marks an evolution to their signature marquetry artworks to also include the world’s first handcrafted marquetry surfboards.

Founded by Emma Wood in the Black Mountains of Wales, w o o d p o p studio has earned a reputation in both traditional craft and contemporary art circles for pairing the classic, rarefied art of marquetry with a bold context and fresh graphic style. Constantly challenging the limits of where and how marquetry can be applied, as a former music industry manager Wood has brought her rock and roll credentials to the world of furniture, drawing on a diverse range of interests to inspire her work – from her love of Mexico and music, to her fascination with geometry, as well as Pop artists Peter Blake and Roy Lichtenstein and the surreal art of Storm Thorgerson.

Situated in the iconic members club Quo Vadis, with its colourful past and a timeless allure, these beautiful pieces find a perfect synergy – uniting traditional craft with cool innovation.

“I am really excited to be presenting my first solo show at Quo Vadis in Soho.  It feels like a real coming together of the various parts of my life that have informed my art; from the high-camp antics of Soho’s own grand dame of drag clubs; Madame Jojo’s to the night-clubs of Mexico where I worked with Sam and Crispin (who now own Quo Vadis), via an office above Ronnie Scott’s (round the corner from QV) during my time in the music industry.  It is the perfect place to present my work and am excited to showcase the full range of my marquetry pieces ranging from wall pieces to 11ft surfboards.” Emma Wood

“In his book Outliers, Malcolm Gladwell promotes the theory that it takes 10,000 hours of practice before you become really good at something, and he cites Mozart, The Beatles and many Grand Chess Masters as examples. To hone in on the intricate detail and storytelling within Wood Pop’s marquetry, it becomes immediately apparent that she has put at least that amount of time into finessing her craft.

“There is a rooted permanence, an elegant structure and understated grace about all that she creates. Her output is bespoke, seamlessly accurate, and simultaneously beautifully understated.

Quo Vadis is a central London restaurant and private member’s club, which since its establishment in 1926 has weathered all sorts of challenges; pandemics, world wars and stock market crashes galore. Having put in well beyond our 10,000 hours as current custodians of this glorious place, we feel a strong connection with her approach and are beyond delighted to display Woodpop’s work – it’s proving a huge hit with our members and has animated the space like never before in its 95 years of life.” Crispin Somerville, Quo Vadis
