We are excited to announce the opening of Steve Whitehead’s solo show. Join us for a glass of wine on Tuesday 13th February 6pm – 8pm. The show will run until 17TH March 2018.

The exhibition will showcase new works by the landscape artists and will continue to explore his love for the British countryside in all its seasons. This is truly an exhibition not to miss!

Steve Whitehead was in born in Coventry and studied fine art at the University of Wales, graduating with an MA in the mid 1980’s. He then continued his studies at the Courtauld Institute of Art. He has won the Wales Open twice and been a prize winner in Manchester Academy and Hunting Art Prize exhibitions. His paintings are held in the permanent collection of the Contemporary Art Society of Wales.

Whitehead’s paintings are quintessentially British and follow a long tradition of realist painters, whilst being informed by artists such as Edward Wandsworth, Eric Ravilious and Algernon Newton.

Whitehead produces beautiful renditions of romantic countryside scenes, painted with careful consideration for the atmosphere he wishes to create, in order to recreate the experience of being in this particular time and place. Because of this his works become about more than just painting a beautiful scene, but about reshaping the land to produce a beautiful painting. Describing his work as ‘Magic Realism’ Whitehead strives to add a surreal aspect to his scenes, eccentric and undoubtedly English.

‘It is rare these days to encounter such realistic scenes that instantly envelop and transport the viewer to the places portrayed by an artist. Whitehead’s compositions are rich with the finest detail, tonal work, use of perspective, light and atmospheric conditions, so they assault all senses in the best possible way.’

- The Mayfair Magazine, 2014

Artist ( Description ):

In talking of his work Whitehead likes the terms 'magic-realism' or ‘hyperrealism’, and his paintings' combination of empathy, strong design and skilful detail give them an almost surreal atmosphere that is instantly memorable.

Whitehead’s subject matter is now principally involved with landscape and often features aspects of the moors, wolds and coast of North Yorkshire, where he resides. His style has echoes of Neo-Classical and Romantic painting of the 19th century as well as the influence of 20th century British and American Realists.
