After a fantastic 2013 season and popular demand to see more exciting photographic works, The Brick Lane Gallery is proud to introduce to you the return of our group exhibition PHOTOGRAPHY NOW. This exhibition brings together a wide range of UK and international photographers from Belgium and Sardinia, Italy. Each photographer with a different approach to challenge the way we view photography today. Photography Now is a continued programme of exhibitions presented by The Brick Lane Gallery. Future photography Now exhibitions are planned for April and October 2014.

We warmly invite you to join us for the opening of PHOTOGRAPHY NOW at The Brick Lane Gallery - Annexe, open from 6pm - 8.30pm on Wednesday 5th February 2014, where you will have the opportunity to meet the exhibiting artists.

FEATURED ARTISTS:

Uk based DAVID HARDY, uses the power of black and white as a base for making his intense and atmospheric pictures seen in this exhibition. He provides motifs that deepen the mystery for the viewer, with decay and imperfection representing a raw beauty of elegance.

ERWIN VAN DEN BRANDE from Belgium, uses imagery to entice the observer, allowing the observer to dwell upon the image, without infringing on the aesthetics. In Photography Now, Erwin photographs everyday objects, removing them from their habitual surroundings and depicting them in their simplest form. Consequently, we are forced to look at them in a different way as the objects become uncharacteristic.

Photographer and Painter, FRANCK BRIZZI references neo-classical painting in his photography, but adds his own witty interpretation. To enhance the painterly effect of his images, Franck adopts a staining technique in his photography process in order to allow the inks to completely absorb through the paper fibres.

Originally from Belgium, London based FRANK VAN IMSCHOOT’s work explores the relationship between the body and urban spaces. He shoots with a very high film; then heavily under-expose the image to create a heavily contrasted picture that results in a loss of detail, but an effective gain in character.

Also based in London, photographer SAM MARSHALL studies the urban lifestyle of the 21st Century, and documents a variety of contemporary environments and the political, social and creative figures that occupy them. Marshall’s images tackles the subject matter of cultural variation, fame and creativity, all documented in an iconic and timeless manner.

Uk artist, MATT STARLING’s body of work focuses on synchronicity, conceptually or aesthetically. In his series “Mirrors”, each photograph explores harmonies between diverse elements in the frame, which the black and white photography accentuates. He draws our attention towards the narrative shared between man and his environment.

Also hailing from local shores, Manchester photographer OLIVER KERSH experiments with placing images on wooden canvases. The process uses different techniques to create a distressed, natural aged effect. The carefully selected photographs are uniquely printed onto wooden canvases and then treated with a specially designed formula.

RENATO PINNA’s work intimately investigates a small village in Sardinia that reflects, in his eyes, this vision of his own native land. He explores emptiness, loneliness, and a feeling of isolation filled by citizens with a disproportionate religious faith.
