Second Nature is Surinam born Dutch-Indonesian painter Miko Veldkamp's first institutional solo show in the UK. Continuing his exploration on race, privilege and cross-cultural identity, for this exhibition the artist has created a new body of large scale paintings where literal and symbolic references to disperse places come together in the artist's layered process and unique painterly lexicon reminiscent of Post-Impressionism and Expressionism.

The geographical coordinates of Lake Gallery, which hosts the exhibition, and the artist's experience of living across distant places will function as the departure point for Velkamp's dreamlike scenes and psychological landscapes. As the viewer moves from east to west, from north to south of the gallery, the landscapes and environments within the works on display will transform, reflecting the navigation of various degrees of otherness and the artists' play with conflicting histories and identities.

Miko Veldkamp is represented by Workplace.

This exhibition is generously supported by Arts Council England, Workplace and Partizan.
