Michael Delacruz at 5th Base Gallery

Michael Delacruz is a painter, visual arts researcher, and currently a PhD candidate at the Slade School of Fine Art, University College London. Here he is exploring the potential of classical narratives, reinterpreted in visual and multimedia terms, to address issues of the social and individual cost of armed conflict and hegemonic expansionism. Through the reconsideration of tragedy’s reception in art, through both theory and practice, Delacruz attempts to further our understanding of how art confronts those pressing concerns, contingencies and failures that weigh upon our own civic conscience. To afford us, as Rothko termed it, a greater possibility of “breathing and stretching ones arms again.”

Prior to pursuing his research degree at the Slade School of Fine Art, Michael Delacruz served for several years as a US Army and US Marine Corps officer, assigned to both special operations and defense intelligence units in the Former Yugoslavia, Iraq, Jordan, Palestine, and Afghanistan. He subsequently served as a civilian counter-insurgency advisor with the Office of the Secretary of Defense in Washington D.C.
