Chalton gallery is delighted to present Diaries, by Maria de Lima.
The exhibition presents new video work alongside sculptural tableaux, exploring the potential of language to operate as a colonising tool. Framed within a female centered narrative each work uses the body and its symptoms of digestive imbalance as means to address the political. History becomes an embodied experience held in the layout of the spaces we live in and the words that overwrite our bodies.
Artist:
Maria de Lima (b.1985, Recife, Brazil) lives and works in Glasgow. De Lima’s practice locates the female body in relation to the production of place through acts of physical construction and abstract linguistic structures. Recurring motifs readjust in various media spanning painting, video, print and sculpture as if in translation, mirroring language as a colonising lens underneath which meaning morphs and shifts. Where language fails she finds the female body in symptomatic unease, and mines the inherent potential of the body as a site for protest.
De Lima graduated from the Royal Academy Schools in 2015. Recent solo shows include INGEST/digest/excrete, [SPACE], London (2018); An exit soft to the touch, ANDOR, London (2016), UK. Selected group exhibitions include: Outpost Members’ Show selected by Jessica Warboys, Outpost, Norwich (2019); Outpost Film Open selected by Stuart Whipps, Outpost, Norwich (2019); Cleave, Glasgow International 2018; Modest Villa Immense Versailles, Kinman Gallery, London (2016). She was the recipient of the 2016 Abbey Fellowship at the British School at Rome.
