S Y N T H E S I S
noun, plural syntheses
[sin-thuh-seez]
1. the combining of the constituent elements of separate material or abstract entities into a single or unified entity (opposed to analysis) the separating of any material or abstract entity into its constituent elements.
2. a complex whole formed by combining.

For his very first solo exhibition in London, the Irish artist and Artfinder bestseller, Fintan Whelan is exhibiting a selection of his recent work at 508 Kings Road Gallery. The value of Fintan's art doubled in the past year, making him one of the most sought after international artists.

The title of the exhibition – Synthesis – suggests both a work process and an accumulation of these creative efforts. The content of his paintings allude to his living environment in the broadest sense, where any kind of objects or any kind of sensations somehow creep into the paintings. This exhibition is an exploration of how the fragility of pictorial illusion subsists amid a world of contingencies. In a contemporary visual culture in which images flood and overwhelm us, Whelan's aim is to re-establish our sense of images as elusive, mysterious and hard-won.

Despite the appearance of serendipity, Whelan's technique involves constant assessment, measurement and exploration of pigments and their configurations, combined with varnishes, oils and a variety of materials. His art is both deeply abstract and grounded in the physical realities of whatever he's using to create it. All these variations determine a complex whole that is essential in shaping an artwork. Whelan's method of painting is characterised by an immediacy of process and an urgency of vision, which he has been developing over the last decade.

The challenge that Whelan's art constitutes his motivation - that is to create resonances between or among the senses by exploiting the ever-changing detail of light and texture. His abstracts are worlds eliciting a multitude of emotional and intellectual responses that we, as viewers, must resolve.

Fintan Whelan was born in Dublin. He has spent his adult life in Ireland, Spain and Germany (his current home). His work has been exhibited and acquired by numerous collectors across North America, Europe, Asia and Australia, and featured in prominent residential projects in UK and USA.
