Natasha Kahn and Paul Cole started DOLPH because, as artists themselves, they were interested in how and why other artists make the work they do. The DOLPH brief asks artists to be generous because what it is asking of them is intrusive. DOLPH wants them to share the personal stuff that is often hidden away as notes to themselves, the idiosyncratic thoughts and influences that go on to form their later propositions. And having asked this of other artists for almost a year, the Directors of DOLPH are now responding to the brief themselves.

In October, the artists share the gallery space but will be separated by a mutual inspiration – a structure that is both a nod to the artist Tal R, and a hoarding around a construction site. Natasha Kahn’s influences are represented in several new pieces of work that interact with, and negotiate the main structure. Her transient installations reference London, Rauschenberg, concrete and architecture. And everything is held together with gaffer tape. Paul Cole’s paintings are informed by drawings made from observation and memory. The paintings incorporate unusual materials such as Plasticine and the rags he uses to clean up with. For DOLPH, Cole uses the structure like a pathway through his creative process, littering it with the influences and raw material that inform and support his improvised working methods.

The exhibition will launch with a Private View on Thursday 1 October from 6.00pm. The artists will also be talking about their influences in a ‘Desert Island Discs’ radio interview on Radio Anti on Saturday 3 October at 3.00pm. Listen online at radioanti.co.uk or on 87.5FM.
