The Brick Lane Gallery is proud to present our Winter CONTEMPORARY PAINTING, featuring 10 outstanding local and international contemporary artists who explore and redefine the opportunities offered by paint as well as its diverse visual narratives. The subject matters range from landscapes, portraits and figurative work to avant-garde reinterpretations and abstract paintings. From the vibrant, colourful and mystical landscapes by Carolyn Bretell, the alluring and dynamic abstract works by Simon Brushfield as well as the dominating creative appropriations and reinterpretations by Allison Day, this exhibition shows a heterogeneous body of works, broadening the limits of contemporary painting.

FEATURED ARTISTS;

Allison Day (from UK) worked on the periphery of the huge musical creative scene in the 60’s and 70’s as an illustrator, supplying images for magazines, companies and the theatre. Whilst working on images for a series of pubs in south London, she was asked to do a reproduction of a 17th Century Dutch floral painting for one of the pub's customers.  One repro job followed another and over the years she has reproduced paintings from the Renaissance to the Impressionists for clients who wanted to keep their original painting safe. She felt sidetracked from proper art but now realised it was a great learning curve. She fell in love with Renaissance methods of painting, and her work now incorporates old painting techniques with current, sometimes slightly surreal ideas. Her work as an illustrator often influences her style:  images from the music world, landscapes, or animals. She was born in London and her soul is urban, her heart rural and her work reflects both.

Carolyn Brettell (from UK) was brought up in Africa and Greece, so the vibrant colours of the mammy cloths the locals wore, and their brightly coloured houses remain with her. She finds the English landscape quite a subdued pallet, so she takes her photos for inspiration in the early and late light which is more vibrant. Then she enhances the underlying hue creating bright/striking landscapes.

She is exhibiting three pieces of the area where she lives in Dorset. She has 2 dogs which she walks daily through the surrounding fields and woods. She loves the way early and late light changes the landscape into a mystical place, enhancing the colours and changing the view. She is mainly inspired by trees and shadows.

Cédric Marachian (from France) is a self – taught artists who has been painting for the past 12 years. He has worked for several galleries in France and Germany. He believes that there is nothing more contradictory than to use our brains when focusing on art. He does not like to reflect on his work because he thinks that there are no ideas behind it. He enjoys who he is when painting and that is the main point of his work.

Grzegorz Mioduszewski (from Poland) is a graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice in Poland. His painting covers a broad range of topics. The final painting is a mosaic of inspirations. This results from the creative method and the desire to tell stories which are often symbolic. He sometimes becomes interested in a photograph which he finds on the Internet which simply begs to be painted. It is the first word from which the story begins. Next, he tells the rest, which creates the plot. Sometimes he takes photographs of missing motives and he sometimes also finds them on the Internet. But this is not a mandatory rule. Sometimes, a uniform motive which he took a photograph of just because it enraptured him is enough. He also paints abstract art or figurative images based on grotesque which have their sources only in his imagination just to refresh his perception.  He tries to use artistic means which are adequate to the undertaken topic or even increase its expression. He does not submit to compromises which could speed up the completion of the painting. Because of his attention to detail, his paintings are the result of even a few months' work. After years of formal experience, he knows how important the awareness of the painting matter is for him.

Hazel Hobson (from UK) demonstrated outstanding artistic skills beyond her years from a very early age (being singled out as an artist of the future and one to watch) With a natural style and flair for creativity, she went on to study Art and Illustration before moving onto a design based degree. With the ability to work with a wide range of mediums and in a variety of different styles, Hazel found she was most passionate about painting emotive land and seascapes.

Now based in London; Hazel searches for artistic inspiration using the natural beauty of landscapes around Europe. Lac d'Annecy for example, is a depiction of Lake Annecy in France; a view so beautiful that she was inspired to recreate it in her own unique style. Other paintings in the collection are derived from stunning locations in the Lake District and Belgium.

Patrick Sicicluna (from Malta) is an artist whose joyous colourful brush strokes leave marks on his canvas as well as on the consciousness of his audience. Described as self taught despite having studied under two high profile Maltese artists, he spent his childhood in Gzira, Malta.  His acute sense of observation developed there.  His vision to become an artist emerged from those formative years and a sense of belonging in that specific place.  The brush is his voice, and the canvasses sing. His quest for experimentation is infinite with splashes of colours, moods, feelings pouring out and resting on the canvas surface to be etched onto the audience's mind forever.

Polina Vasenkova (from Russia) is a self-taught artist, who uses abstraction as a form of expression to showcase the diversity of human perception. She believes that one painting can have so many different meanings through different eyes. Every time you see it there is another element to appreciate, just as in life, just as it should be. You can never be bored with it. She loves to experiment with everything from medium to material, creating original works every time; she is an artist that lives by the sole rule to paint simply because it makes her happy. Polina sells original paintings, prints, home-deco with print of artworks, printed phone and iPad cases.

Simon Brushfield (from Australia) always presents different results. The artist loves exploring the abstract visual landscape not knowing what might appear. He loves colour and interesting shapes, intermingled with suggestive ideas that potentially trigger the viewer’s imagination for something personal in their life. He uses many layering techniques to hopefully produce an attractive image, creating a surface that provides textural interest. Predominantly using acrylic mediums as a base, and built up with layers of oils and varnish, his artwork sometimes incorporates mixed media, such as grass, sticks, Australian gum nuts and even plastics to create texture, visual suggestion and a sense of identity.”

Val Fawbert (from UK) creates contemporary and original palette knife impressions on deep edged unframed canvas which are proactive. Her work is energised, projecting movement, light and importantly, encouraging involvement, the inclusion of the viewer, not just as a spectator. She encourages them to identify with the moment using nondescript character evoking fleeting memories, moments, flashbacks, reactions “extraordinary! why that could be me?” while savouring the experience and moving on from the reality into the illusion, the impression is created.

Her versatility is a strength and endorses the unlimited ability she has to develop her wealth of ideas and project them onto the canvas and share them with a wider audience.

This physical and sculptural process allows her to attack the canvas. In some instances a degree of restraint is required with limited use of colour, skimming the knife, exposing the textured surface of the canvas. This use of acrylic paint on the cutting edge of the knife, scraping, scoring and plastering, results in a hands on print like method creating the impression.

The Marina triptych represents the natural solidity of the cliffs sheltering the manmade architectural structures as if carved out of the cliff face. Built on reclaimed land out of which evolves the perpetual motion of Brighton Marina life i.e. The Cafe Culture, The Boating Fraternity, Day Trippers. The mingling of locals and holiday makers alike, an eclectic mix.
