Repeatedly working from the same site – an active limestone quarry in the south of France, Tooney Phillips’ work is primarily abstract in nature. For the last twenty-five years, drawing on her experience as an architect and her fascination with this strange and unfamiliar landscape, Phillips has developed a body of work including printmaking, collage and photo-montage, where she has explored the age-old question of how to record three-dimensional space in two dimensions. The spatial characteristics of the quarry, that have been created over 2000 years with the repetitive cutting out of blocks, allows for this exploration of form and space.

Taking the representational pictorial space and physically cutting into it, she takes it apart and then reconstructs it, playing with the physicality of the paper. Through her work Phillips describes the contours, the very edges of the space(s) that can be found within the quarry’s geometric formation.

ABOUT THE FOUNDRY GALLERY:

The Foundry Gallery exhibit contemporary art that explores the relationships between art and architecture. Established as part of Le Lay Architects in London's Chelsea the gallery forms the foundation of the practices research into how architectural ideas are conceived and how people engage with buildings and structures.

Each year we choose three artists to exhibit new artwork with each one putting forward a proposal for either a new body of work or a continuation of current work fitting the galleries ethos. We work for a year with each artist providing them with support in which to explore their working practice and build an exhibition. Our program also consists of us renting the gallery space to more established artists, galleries and curators who hire the gallery space in between our exhibition program. This income enables us to continue working with the artists we support.

Venue ( Address ):

39 Old Church Street, Chelsea, London, SW3 5BS, U.K.
