Claudi Casanovas: Early Work

City:

Categories:

Date:
Wednesday, 28 June 2017 to Friday, 28 July 2017

In conjunction with our exhibition of new work by Claudi Casanovas at the Fitzrovia Chapel, we are showing earlier works by the artist at our gallery (15 Royal Arcade).  This exhibition features pieces from Lluna Nova and Quart Creixent, two instalments from Casanovas's 'Lunar Cycle' series.  Our exhibition at the Fitzrovia Chapel, Quart Minvant, is the final chapter of this series.

'The Lunar Cycle' series began with Lluna Nova (New Moon), which consists of three groups of five sculptures.  These sculptures bear the names of Black Virgins, alluding to the promise of fertility.  This instalment was made in 2013, and one of these three groups is on display at our gallery.  Three of these five sculptures on display were exhibited at the Hangzhou International Contemporary Ceramic Art Biennale in China last December.

Two pairs, Bacant and Verduc from the Quart Creixent chapter of the series are also on display at our gallery, and these date from 2014.  Quart Creixent (Crescent Moon) are inspired by the figure of Dionysius, which refers to an everlasting and renewing force.

Our visitors are invited to view these earlier chapters of 'The Lunar Cycle' series at our gallery from the 28th of June through the 28th of July, and the final instalment of the series, Quart Minvant at the Fitzrovia Chapel from the 11th through the 23rd of July.

In addition to works from Lluna Nova and Quart Creixent, we have some very early pieces by Casanovas on display in the mezzanine of our gallery.  These include a rare and early bowl from 1989, and five sculptures from Casanovas's Blocks sequence from 2001.
