Acts of Searching Closely

A group of curators from Central Saint Martins will turn the ASC Gallery into "centre for research" with 15 artists taking part and linking with local groups and providing workshops.

Nine student-curators from Central Saint Martins have organised a group exhibition that will use ASC Gallery as a functioning, multidisciplinary ‘centre for research’. This ‘centre’ will act as a means to investigate two speculative questions (‘how do you fill a space?’ and ‘how will we  remember now?’) to open up a range of questions about  ‘regeneration’ through either art or dialogue. ‘Space’ and ‘the present’ have provided the focus for the whole project, inspiring the methodology and realisation of the research. An open call hoped to find diverse and different approaches exploring how others have looked at these themes in similar and different places.

The show includes works by 15 artists, and will display each one as a piece of a research. The  contributions cover many different artistic languages and approaches; installations, videos, workshops, drawings, audio works and performances. The artists featured are: Alex Bodea, Alice Wilson, Bex Massey, Camilla Brueton, Eva Wilkinson, Freya Johnson Ross, Gilda Lockheart, Grace Holliday, Laura Napier, Matt Parker, Mustafa Boga, R.L. Acts of Searching Closely, as a research archive, wants to problematize the singular, often authoritarian narrative of regeneration and renewal projects. Additionally, the research centre is designed to be a space for questions and answers, and hopes to generate further research. Resources and labour will be dedicated to such enquiry and the results documented in the exhibition. In this way, we as the curators promote a creative and exploratory mode of collaboration through research.

A series of related events, interventions and installations will occur during the 10-day exhibition. Confirmed events are below and more will be announced. The show will come to serve as a record of the research inquiry and the social relations embedded within the space.
